TfL Face Covering Exemption

June 30th, 2020

In line with Government rules, face coverings must be worn for the full duration of journeys on the public transport network.  TfL have now published exceptions to this rule if a person has a disability.

A person will have a reasonable excuse and will not be required to wear a face covering in the following circumstances:

  • Where a person cannot put on, wear, or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment or disability (within the meaning of section 6 of the Equality Act 2010), or without severe distress
  • Where a person is providing a lip-reading service to a person they are travelling with

If you are exempt from wearing a face covering, you can download and print the card below and carry it with you. You may want to print it and wear it on a lanyard or attach it to your clothing. You can show it if you are asked why you are not wearing a face covering. TfL will also recognise similar cards that may have been issued by other transport operators. You can also display it on your phone.

If you do not have a printer or a smartphone, you can contact TfL and they will print and post a card to you. Call us on 0343 222 1234.
